SUMMARY:José M. Alamillo presents Deportes: The Making of a Sporting Mexican Diaspora

Alamillo\, professor and chair of the Chicana/o Studies Department at CSU Channel Islands\, presents his new book\, Deportes: The Making of a Sporting Mexican Diaspora (Rutgers University Press\, 2021). Spanning the first half of the twentieth century\, Deportes uncovers the hidden experiences of Mexican male and female athletes\, teams and leagues and their supporters who fought for a more level playing field on both sides of the border. Professor Alamillo will be introduced by Genevieve Carpio\, Assistant Professor of Chicana/o and Central American Studies at UCLA; Rudy Mondragón\, doctoral candidate in Chicana/o and Central American studies at UCLA\, will moderate the Q&A. \nAlamillo was the 2002-2003 Institute of American Cultures visiting scholar at the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center\, where he first started researching sports history. SUMMARY:Francisco Galarte presents Brown Trans Figurations
DESCRIPTION:Queer of Color Genealogies – Spring Book Series \nPresentation of Brown Trans Figurations: Rethinking Race\, Gender\, and Sexuality in Chicanx/Latinx Studies by Professor Francisco Galarte \n  \nNote: This event has passed. Please use the following link to watch the event’s Zoom recording. \n\n  \nPlease join us when Professor Francisco J. Galarte\, Assistant Professor of American Studies and Women\, Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of New Mexico\, discusses their latest book Brown Trans Figurations: Rethinking Race\, Gender\, and Sexuality in Chicanx/Latinx Studies. The event will include a presentation by Professor Galarte and a discussion led by Professor Maylei Blackwell. This event is open to all. \nJoin the event via Zoom: https://ucla.zoom.us/j/98970982935?pwd=UUM2SFRVaTUzR3BnQTVkVGx3cUJYZz09 \nMeeting ID: 989 7098 2935\nPasscode: 810371 \n  \nWithin queer\, transgender\, and Latinx and Chicanx cultural politics\, brown transgender narratives are frequently silenced and erased. Brown trans subjects are treated as deceptive\, unnatural\, nonexistent\, or impossible\, their bodies\, lives\, and material circumstances represented through tropes and used as metaphors. Restoring personhood and agency to these subjects\, Francisco J. Galarte advances “brown trans figuration” as a theoretical framework to describe how transness and brownness coexist within the larger queer\, trans\, and Latinx historical experiences. \nBrown Trans Figurations presents a collection of representations that reveal the repression of brown trans narratives and make that repression visible and palpable. Galarte examines the violent deaths of two transgender Latinas and the corresponding narratives that emerged about their lives\, analyzes the invisibility of brown transmasculinity in Chicana feminist works\, and explores how issues such as transgender politics can be imagined as part of Chicanx and Latinx political movements. This book considers the contexts in which brown trans narratives appear\, how they circulate\, and how they are reproduced in politics\, sexual cultures\, and racialized economies.

SUMMARY:L. Heidenreich presents Nepantla Squared: Transgender Mestiz@ Histories in Times of Global Shift
DESCRIPTION:Queer of Color Genealogies – Spring Book Series \nPresentation of Nepantla Squared: Transgender Mestiz@ Histories in Times of Global Shift by Professor Linda Heidenreich \n  \nNote: This event has passed. Please use the following link to watch the event’s Zoom recording. \n\n  \nPlease join us when Professor Linda Heidenreich\, Associate Professor with the Department of History at Washington State University\, discusses her latest book Nepantla Squared: Transgender Mestiz@ Histories in Times of Global Shift. The event will include a presentation by Professor Heidenreich and a discussion led by Professor Maylei Blackwell. This event is open to all. \nJoin the event via Zoom: https://ucla.zoom.us/j/98970982935?pwd=UUM2SFRVaTUzR3BnQTVkVGx3cUJYZz09 \nMeeting ID: 989 7098 2935\nPasscode: 810371 \n  \nNepantla Squared maps the lives of two transgender mestiz@s\, one during the turn of the twentieth century and one during the turn of the twenty-first century\, to chart the ways race\, gender\, sex\, ethnicity\, and capital function differently in different times. To address the erasure of transgender mestiz@ realities from history\, Linda Heidenreich employs an intersectional analysis that critiques monopoly and global capitalism. Heidenreich builds on the work of Gloria Anzaldúa’s concept of nepantleras\, those who could live between and embody more than one culture\, to coin the term nepantla²\, marking times of capitalist transition where gender was also in motion. Transgender mestiz@s\, too\, embodied that movement. Heidenreich insists on a careful examination of the multiple in-between spaces that construct lives between cultures and genders during in-between times of shifting empire and capital. In so doing\, they offer an important discussion of race\, class\, nation\, and citizenship centered on transgender bodies of color that challenges readers to rethink the way they understand the gendered social and economic challenges of today. \nLinda Heidenreich is an associate professor of history and of women’s\, gender\, and sexuality studies at Washington State University. They are the author of “This Land Was Mexican Once”: Histories of Resistance from Northern California and coeditor of Three Decades of Engendering History: Selected Works of Antonia I. Castañeda.

SUMMARY:Book Panel - We are Not Dreamers
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in a conversation online (over Zoom) with the book contributors of We are Not Dreamers: Undocumented Scholars Theorize Undocumented Life in the United States. \nThe widely recognized “Dreamer narrative” celebrates the educational and economic achievements of undocumented youth to justify a path to citizenship. While a well-intentioned\, strategic tactic to garner political support of undocumented youth\, it has promoted the idea that access to citizenship and rights should be granted only to a select group of “deserving” immigrants. The contributors to We Are Not Dreamers—themselves currently or formerly undocumented—poignantly counter the Dreamer narrative by grappling with the nuances of undocumented life in this country. Theorizing those excluded from the Dreamer category—academically struggling students\, transgender activists\, and queer undocumented parents—the contributors call for an expansive articulation of immigrant rights and justice that recognizes the full humanity of undocumented immigrants while granting full and unconditional rights. Illuminating how various institutions reproduce and benefit from exclusionary narratives\, this volume articulates the dangers of the Dreamer narrative and envisions a different way forward. \nBook Contributors:  \nDr. Leisy Abrego\, Professor and Chair Core Faculty\, Chicana/o and Central American Studies\, UCLA\nDr. Genevieve Negrón-Gonzales\, Associate Professor\, Leadership Studies\, University of San Francisco\nJoel Sati\, PhD student in the Jurisprudence and Social Policy program at UC Berkeley and JD candidate at the Yale Law School\nDr. Carolina Valdivia\, UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellow\, Sociology\, UCLA \nDiscussant: \nDr. Frances Contreras\nAssociate Vice Chancellor for Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion\, UC San Diego and Professor\, Education Studies\, UC San Diego.

SUMMARY:The Box Project
DESCRIPTION:The Box Project originated in France with the Paris Women’s Salon\, a group of creative women\, who began getting together to talk about their work and support each other in their creative endeavors. This inspired the creation of its two sister groups\, one in Mexico City and another in Los Angeles\, which quickly grew with women wishing to participate. The women in Paris began sending small gifts in matchbox-sized boxes to their sister groups\, and responding to this generosity\, the women in Mexico City and L.A. sent gifts in return. \nThis exhibit will feature 76 women artists from Mexico City\, Los Angeles\, and Paris. \nThe opening reception will be on November 9th from 5:00 PM- 8:00 PM. \nExhibition on view through January 10th. \nGallery hours Tuesday-Saturday\, 11 AM to 5 PM.
